LISSIE BALDWIN

Lissie Baldwin has worked in the fashion industry for over 30 years. After graduating from Central Saint Martins and taking time off to raise a family, her frustration with the constraints of the industry prompted her to don a new cloak: she became a textile fine artist in 2021, collaging ordinary materials into extraordinary three-dimensional collages.

Lissie's practice stems from a passion for collecting and repurposing vintage items. Drawing from images found on the internet, in her library, or on her studio pinboard, she is led by her practice, often inspired by her own material handling to adorn a particular story forgotten from the history books, working in a time and labour-intensive format where layers of colour, pattern and composition overlap into her finished piece. At her core is a commitment to revaluing an object's history - often embellishing them with hand-finished elements of paint, stitching or embroidery, such as in her Stamp series, where she sourced old stamps of popular icons (The Queen, The Beatles, Amy Winehouse), inspired by Paco Rabanne dresses and knitwear patterns to combine these cut-outs with aluminium and link them into chain-mail shirts, scarves and dresses.

Joyous, fantastical, and with a unrivalled care and attention to detail, Lissie's mixed media collage compositions are sure to leave you, and your interior, in a patterned dream.

Flower series

"My goal is to run two ideas side by side. It's all about transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary by using old or unusual materials to create something beautiful. In my work, it's also important to tell stories about little forgotten bits of history." - LISSIE BALDWIN

Chainmail Series

Lissie Baldwin's 'Chainmail Series' consist of discs of vintage stamps pinned to fine fabric and linked together with aluminium. Each design is then assembled into the shape of a scarf, a shirt or a dress against a white or black background, all framed in black or white painted wood. The overall feel is like dressing up to the football game of British history.
