LUCY STORRS

Born in Dartmoor, UK

Growing up on a remote sheep farm in Dartmoor, Lucy Storrs' expert understanding of wool developed alongside a deep love of painting. Her artworks marry the two: in her unique position as a painter-weaver, she creates textured landscapes. Her works combine the feel of wool with the gestural capabilities of paint, forming brightly-coloured, abstract renditions of pastoral-themed oil paintings and watercolours in wool. Storrs is much inspired by the natural beauty of the land. Her works emerge from a free dive into this difficult-to-curb textile, striking a fine balance between relinquishing control of each woollen spool and intervening with movement. As she activates the wool's barbs into flowing layers of vibrant colour, they merge into animated, tactile scenes.

Lucy's work is exhibited widely across the U.K. and held in private collections at home and overseas. She is excited to continue exploring the possibilities brought out by this unique material through more abstract works and aerial landscapes.

Abstract Landscape Series

The 'Abstract Landscapes' are a key series for Lucy Storrs. In them, she revisits the 18th century English Romantic notion of the Sublime: that our knowledge of the natural world is derived from sensory experience. There is an undisputed charm about these landscapes - square in format yet strikingly soft and open to our interpretation, they bring up memories of particular places we hold dear, triggering our own connections to the land. Her winter snowscapes and spring showers call forth the intimate and nostalgic: factors inherent to her material, yet also entirely contemporary in colour palette. 'April Showers' introduces a ray of sunlight in the form of a single neon yellow silk thread, whereas 'Softly Spoken Day' and 'Spellbound by Winter' contain little silhouettes of lark and sheep to remind us of our inconsequence in the vast scheme of nature's existence.
