ONYX: TRANSFORMATION
EXHIBITION DATES: 30 MAY - 14 JUNE 2022

Onyx is a self taught artist born and raised in the East End of London where he continues to live and work today.

Art revealed itself to Onyx a number of years ago following an accident which left him in a coma for several weeks. He spent a year in recovery and creating sculptural artwork became a way for him to address some of the revelations that he had experienced during his time in hospital. Essentially Onyx turned to art as a means of therapy and a way of him processing some of the insights that he had sub-consciously perceived during this time. His story is incredibly unique, turning what could have been a tragedy into a life changing mission to create art.

"A memory of the future is only possible if you have been there", he says, and an Onyx artwork seeks to take you to this dystopian future. He creates an abstract reality built from discarded objects which are given new life and regain new purpose, the objects and elements used to create the artworks are no longer a toy to be played with or a subsequent classical figure to be admired, now they are a means to evoke a deeper memory, to create a layered landscape of experiences and stories.

Onyx 's obsession is to create moments from our future using tiny fragments of our past. Through each object he uses he aims to take you, the viewer, on your own personal journey as you are sucked into his alternative reality. Themes of metamorphosis and transformation, the cycle and growth of life and consciousness are depicted within an Onyx artwork, crossing boundaries between what is familiar and what is not.

Onyx's artworks are beautifully presented, the sculptures mounted onto gleaming perspex and inside high-specification presentation cases, the tiny elements within all merging together perfectly and gleaming in all their metallic glory.
