SUSILA BAILEY-BOND
'AWAKENINGS'
London based artist Susila Bailey-Bond is best known for her delicate papercut work where dragonflies and butterflies gracefully swarm across the canvas, and flowers bloom in soft colours. Susila also creates effervescent and colourful pieces using spray-painted aluminium and found objects, somewhat of an antithesis to the neutral shades of the paperwork, but rather uplifting in style and vibrancy.
Bailey-Bond's artwork has been previously described by curators as 'Unapologetically Joyful', and after the last year of uncertainty it seems appropriate to offer some joy to the world. She explains a little about the show below:
"AWAKENINGS is the outcome of lockdown. As an artist with a studio at home I considered myself lucky to be able to continue working much the same as normal through 2020, in fact somehow I felt I had more time to focus and consider my practice. At first it seemed that artworks that I had been planning for ages were finally coming to life, and as time went on I realised I had built up a solid body of work. However, as the normal opportunities to exhibit were unavailable and my show had no definite start date, things started to drift. So now, as Spring marches on and we unfurl from a very strange time of our lives I feel a sense of Awakening, both creatively and communicatively, I am excited by possibilites, I quietly revel in seeing people finally able to eat together and tentativelly hug their family and friends, people are venturing outdoors, the sun is shining, life feels like it's on its way back and, albeit gingerly, we can step out to enjoy it".
'AWAKENINGS' is Bailey-Bond's 4th solo show with Woolff Gallery, she has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, USA, and in the Far East. Her work can be found in both private and corporate collections globally. Susila will be relocating some of her studio into the gallery basement for the duration of the show in order to work on some commissions so this is an ideal time to meet the artist, if this is something that interests you please contact us.
