JOANNE TINKER
Born in 1969, Nottingham, U.K.
True to her family name, Joanne Tinker began 'tinkering' with trinkets you might find in the bottom of a backpack when training to become a silversmith at Birmingham art college in the 90s. After gaining a reputation as an artist working with unconventional materials, she has gone on to produce several pieces for art collectors, fairs and museums. Her popular foil wrapping pieces have met critical acclaim in seminal shows such as London’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the New York Museum of Art & Design, The National Science Museum in London, and The White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney. She also has several high-profile private commissions under her belt, such as the Hampton Court Flower Show Gardens, cruise liners, and the TV production of Dennis Potter's 'Cold Lazarus.' Tinker currently lives and works in the beautiful Yorkshire moors.
Goblets Series
In 'The Goblets Series' Joanne Tinker uses repurposed sweet wrappers and candy foils to form rows and rows of cheerful miniature goblets and vessels. Often invoking a sense of nostalgia, these works display order and repetition. Tinker's use of foil is constant throughout her practice mostly due to its vivid luminosity, but these perfectly formed goblets transform this everyday and usually discarded material into something precious and beautiful. Below are examples of works in this series, each work is presented in a wooden box frame with museum quality glass. Please contact us for available works or bespoke commissioned pieces.
"The use of chocolate foil wrappings remains a constant in my work - not because of my love of chocolate - but rather my wholehearted appreciation of the material’s colour, texture, delicacy and strength. Simply, I unwrap one form and recreate another. And then repeat. And repeat" - JOANNE TINKER

Chairs Series
In 'The Chairs Series,' Joanne Tinker uses repurposed Champagne and luxury wine cages to form rows and rows of miniature chairs, each fashioned into a unique and individual style - there are no two chairs the same in one of these works. Tinker often places a cork in the composition - she calls this a bar stool, as well as the occasional fold-up chair embodied by a squashed cage. Again, these works display the artists love of repetition, the miniature chairs sitting orderly on their little shelves. In Joanne's own words:
'As many collections are categorised by forms of repetition, so my collections are characterised by the replication of multiples and miniatures, blending my childhood fascinations with deliberated uniformity.' - JOANNE TINKER

Ingots Series
Joanne Tinker's 'Ingots' consist of rectangles of wood covered in foil, reusing the off-cuts of shelves from her popular 'Chairs' and 'Goblets' series. A few of the of the individual ingots protrude slightly from the face of the piece, all framed in black painted wood. The overall feel of these artworks lie somewhere between a chocolate library and a three-dimensional Klimt painting, glowing warmly as you walk past.

Foil Series
A hugely popular artist, Joanne Tinker’s interest in re-using materials that would normally be discarded is a message fairly paramount to our society today. Alongside her delightful tiny goblets, Tinker also incorporates other shapes and collections from discarded foils into her practice.
